Drives Florida Miami, the Everglades, the Keys and Southwest Florida
Old Cutler Road
Miami, Florida · Coral Gables → Palmetto Bay
The drive
Old Cutler Road is one of the first roads in Dade County, built to connect Coconut Grove with Cutler, an old farming community. It follows the limestone ridge along Biscayne Bay that early settlers called the Reef, was widened into a wagon trail and declared a public road in 1895, and was designated a state Historic Road in 1974.
The drive starts at Cocoplum in Coral Gables and runs south under banyans and live oaks past Matheson Hammock, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and the Deering Estate to Palmetto Bay. It winds more than most Miami roads, which is why it rates Sweeping rather than Leisurely.
