Drives Florida Miami, the Everglades, the Keys and Southwest Florida
Card Sound Road
Upper Keys, Florida · Florida City → Key Largo
The drive
Card Sound Road is the quiet way into the Florida Keys. Instead of the four-lane stretch of US 1, it leaves Florida City and runs across flat, empty mangrove country, climbs over the high Card Sound Bridge, and passes Alabama Jack's, an open-air bar on the water, before meeting US 1 again at Key Largo.
There's no climbing and hardly a bend; what you get is space, water on both sides, and very little traffic. It ends where CR 905 joins US 1 in Key Largo, which is where the Overseas Highway begins, so it's the natural first leg of a drive down the Keys.
Along the way
- Florida City (US 1)
- Alabama Jack's
- Key Largo (US 1)
Good to know
- There's a small toll, electronic only: by SunPass, or billed by your plate for a little more. It rises each October.
- Two smaller bridges on the road are being replaced, with one lane and temporary signals through the work zones.
- There's nowhere to stop for fuel between Florida City and Key Largo.
Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Monroe County: Card Sound Toll Authority.
