The drive
US 41, the Tamiami Trail, runs west from Miami across the Everglades and Big Cypress to Everglades City. It is flat and straight over sawgrass and cypress swamp, with alligators in the canal beside the road.
The drive passes Shark Valley, one of Everglades National Park's three entrances, and the Big Cypress National Preserve, 729,000 acres of hardwood hammocks, pinelands, prairies, cypress swamps and mangroves. The tiny Ochopee post office sits along the road, and the preserve has scenic drives, roadside parks and boardwalks such as the Kirby Storter Boardwalk.
