The drive

This is A1A along the Space Coast barrier island, from Cocoa Beach south through Satellite Beach, Indialantic and Melbourne Beach to Sebastian Inlet. The ocean is on one side and the Indian River Lagoon on the other. It is a flat drive, 34.4 miles in about an hour, slow in town and easier once the beach towns thin out.

South of Melbourne Beach the road runs beside Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, which covers about 20 miles of coast along A1A from Melbourne Beach to Wabasso Beach. It was established in 1991 to protect nesting loggerhead and green sea turtles, and it hosts roughly a quarter of the nests in the United States.

The drive ends just north of the Sebastian Inlet bridge, next to Sebastian Inlet State Park, which sits on both sides of the inlet. The park has fishing jetties and a surf break, and the McLarty Treasure Museum shows artifacts from the 1715 wreck of a Spanish fleet.
