The drive

A1A drops off the Sebastian Inlet bridge onto Orchid Island and runs south to Vero Beach, 16.6 miles in about 25 minutes. It is a quiet barrier-island road with the Atlantic to the east and the Indian River Lagoon to the west, and few places to stop other than the beach parks.

The beach along this stretch is part of Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, a roughly 20-mile string of beaches from Melbourne Beach to Wabasso Beach set aside in 1991 for nesting sea turtles. Wabasso Beach Park is on the east side of A1A where CR 510 meets it, and Treasure Shores Park, an unguarded beach with trails, restrooms and showers, is along the way.

The road is flat and mostly straight, with a dune and sea-grape shoulder, so the draw is the coast itself rather than curves.

  • The drive begins just south of Sebastian Inlet State Park, which has fishing jetties, a surf break and the McLarty Treasure Museum.
