Carve vs Apple Maps

For scenic drives, car clubs and group drives · Checked October 2026

Carve (carve.run) is a scenic-drive planner and turn-by-turn navigation app for cars and motorcycles, on iPhone with CarPlay and Android with Android Auto — the Apple Maps alternative for scenic drives, with routes your whole group can open on iPhone or Android.

The short answer. Apple Maps is a fine everyday map, built into every iPhone, with offline maps and up to 14 stops. But it's built for getting somewhere, not for the drive: it has no way to find twisty, scenic roads, can't share a multi-stop route, and isn't on Android — so half your group can't open it. Carve finds the good roads, shares one route to everyone on iPhone and Android, drives it without swapping in a faster road, and with Group puts everyone on the same map.

Questions

Is Carve better than Apple Maps for scenic drives?

Yes. Apple Maps finds the quickest way and has no scenic or twisty-road option. Carve finds great driving roads and guides you along exactly the route you planned, without swapping it for a faster one.

Can I share a multi-stop Apple Maps route with friends?

Apple Maps' sharing is built around Share ETA, which lets people follow your drive; it doesn't send them your multi-stop route. In Carve, one link gives everyone the whole route, on iPhone or Android, and your edits reach them.

My friends have Android phones. Can we drive together?

Yes, in Carve: it runs on iPhone with CarPlay and Android with Android Auto, and a shared route opens on both. Apple Maps has no Android app.

Does Carve work offline and on CarPlay?

Yes, both with Carve Apex: each route downloads with its map and every turn, and the drive shows on CarPlay (or Android Auto).

Can I see my friends on the map while we drive?

With Carve's Group, yes: everyone driving the route shows on the map and the car's screen by name. In Apple Maps, Share ETA lets others follow you one way; friends' locations live in Find My.

Is Carve free?

Planning, sharing and driving with a signal are free. Carve Apex is $29.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, or $4.99 a month.
