How to plan a scenic drive

Everyday map apps solve one problem: the fastest way there. A scenic drive is the opposite problem — you know roughly where you want to go, and you want the best roads to get there, then to actually drive them. Here's how to plan one in Carve (carve.run), the scenic-drive planner for cars and motorcycles, and how to make sure the route you plan is the route you drive.

Step by step

  1. Start from a great road

Open Carve and look at the drives near you, or explore 1,200+ hand-picked drives on one map at carve.run/drives, beside a list of the ones in view. Each one shows how far, how long and how twisty it is — Leisurely, Sweeping, Twisty or Intense. Open one and it's already a route: drive it as it is, or use it as the start of your own.

  2. Or describe the drive you want

In search, say it in your own words — “a twisty hour, back by 5” — and Carve plans it. Or tap Surprise me for a scenic loop from where you are. Five described drives a day are free; Carve Apex makes them unlimited.

  3. Build it stop by stop

Search for places or tap the map to add them: up to 10 named stops (the overlook, lunch, fuel) and up to 100 points between start and finish, so you can steer the route onto exactly the roads you want. In Options, pick Scenic, Balanced or Shortest; Scenic leans hardest toward the good roads, and great driving roads are marked on the map as you plan.

  4. Or plan it on a big screen

On a computer, the free planner at carve.run/plan does the same: search or click to add stops, add a great road whole, and see the distance and time as you go. Save it and you get a link, a QR code to open it on your phone, and printed turn-by-turn directions.

  5. Already have the route? Bring it over

Paste a Google Maps link (share the route, Copy Link) or a Ride with GPS link into Carve's Import, or open a GPX file from Ride with GPS, Garmin or any other app — in the app, or on the Import tab at carve.run/plan. Carve keeps the route's exact roads, and it's free.

  6. Check the route before you commit

Carve shows the distance, drive time and elevation profile, and the weather along the way. Flyover flies the whole route in 3D, so you can see the switchbacks before you meet them (your first one is free). With Carve Apex, Road conditions show wet roads, ice, fog and wind, and Popular times show when the road is usually quiet.

  7. Download it for the stretches with no signal

The best roads are where the signal isn't. With Carve Apex, turn on Available Offline in the route's preview while you still have a connection; the map and every turn download, and the route's card says Downloaded when it's ready.

  8. Drive it — exactly as planned

Tap Go Now. You can start from anywhere: Carve guides you to the route, and if you're nearer the end, it offers to run it the other way round. Spoken turn-by-turn follows your route and never swaps it for a faster one. Take a wrong turn or skip a stop, and Carve leads you forward to where you'll rejoin the route — not back to where you left it. See debris, an animal or a crash? Report it with one tap, and drivers behind you on the route are warned. With Apex, it's all on CarPlay or Android Auto.

Questions

What's the best app for planning a scenic drive?

Carve is built for it: it finds twisty, scenic roads (1,200+ hand-picked drives, plus a planner that leans toward the good roads), lets you plan stop by stop, and drives the route turn by turn without ever swapping it for a faster one. Everyday apps like Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze are built to find the fastest route, and re-route you toward it.

How do I stop my map app from rerouting me off a scenic route?

Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze don't have a setting that locks a route. Carve keeps your route by design: it never re-routes onto a faster road, and after a wrong turn it gives directions back to the route you planned. You can paste a Google Maps route link into Carve to drive it there.

How do I find twisty roads near me?

Open Carve and look at the drives near you — each is rated Leisurely, Sweeping, Twisty or Intense — or tap Surprise me for a scenic loop from where you are. You can also browse every drive by state at carve.run/drives.

Can I drive a scenic route with no cell signal?

Yes, with Carve Apex: turn on Available Offline for the route while you have a connection, and the map and every turn download, so the whole drive works with no signal.

Is it free?

Planning (in the app or at carve.run/plan), importing from Google Maps, Ride with GPS or a GPX file, sharing and driving with a signal are free. Carve Apex — $29.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, or $4.99 a month — adds offline maps, the group on your map, 3D previews, CarPlay and Android Auto, road conditions and popular times. See pricing.

Can I import a GPX file or a Ride with GPS route?

Yes, free. Open a GPX file from Ride with GPS, Garmin or another app, or paste a Ride with GPS link, in the app's Import or at carve.run/plan. Carve keeps the route's roads and you can drive it turn by turn.
