The drive

PA 44 climbs north from Waterville, where it crosses Little Pine Creek, into the Tiadaghton and Susquehannock State Forests. At Oleona it joins PA 144 on Pine Hill Road until PA 144 splits off at Carter Camp. This is a 58.6-mile, leisurely drive of about 1 hour 25 minutes, with mostly gentle curves and 5,500 feet of climb along the way.

The best-known stop is Cherry Springs State Park, which sits on PA 44 inside the 262,000-acre Susquehannock State Forest. DCNR named it the state's first Dark Sky Park in 2000, and the park calls it one of the best stargazing sites on the eastern seaboard. A 2018 law gave the Potter County section of PA 44 the name Highway to the Stars.

The drive ends in Coudersport, where PA 44 shares East 2nd Street with US 6.
