The drive

The Twisted Sisters, also called the Three Sisters, are three ranch roads west of Leakey: RM 337, RM 336 and RM 335. Together they make the Hill Country's best-known motorcycle loop, and Leakey, the Real County seat in the Frio Canyon, is where riders base for them.

This loop starts in Leakey and heads west on RM 337 over the hills to Camp Wood. A few miles of Highway 55 lead to Barksdale, and then RM 335 runs north up the Nueces valley, a road of big dips and rises with fewer sharp curves. Highway 41 crosses the top of the plateau eastward, and RM 336 brings you back south to Leakey. RM 336 starts out straighter, then turns quick and unpredictable on the way down, with sudden elevation changes and off-camber bends. The ranch land is mostly unfenced, with cattle guards, deer and livestock on the road.

Good to know

  • Livestock roam unfenced ranch land, and deer are common: be ready for an animal around any bend.
  • Expect cattle guards, steep drop-offs and few guardrails on the tightest stretches.
  • It's popular with motorcyclists, especially on weekends, and these roads have a record of fatal motorcycle crashes: ride within your limits.
  • Leakey and Camp Wood are the main towns on the loop; plan fuel and food around them.
