Drives Texas Corpus Christi, the Coastal Bend and the Rio Grande Valley
South Padre Island: Park Road 100
TX 100, Padre Boulevard, Ocean Boulevard · Port Isabel → End of the pavement
The drive
This is the only road onto South Padre Island, driven all the way to where it stops. Highway 100 leaves Port Isabel and climbs onto the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge, nearly two and a half miles across the Laguna Madre, then comes down into the town of South Padre Island and turns north as Park Road 100, Padre Boulevard.
The first few miles are town: four lanes, traffic lights, hotels and condos. North of town the buildings stop and the road narrows to two lanes through open dunes, with the Gulf on the right and the flats of the Laguna Madre on the left. It ends close to the barricades where the pavement runs out, about a dozen miles up the island, near Beach Access 6.
The north end is good birding country. Texas Parks and Wildlife lists the end of the pavement on its coastal birding trail: Peregrine Falcons in winter and migration, and Snowy and Piping Plovers feeding at the water's edge.
Along the way
- Port Isabel
- End of the pavement
Good to know
- The causeway is the island's only road link, so every car on and off the island uses it.
- Beyond the end of the pavement the beach is for four-wheel-drive vehicles only; don't take a regular car onto the sand.
- Cameron County closes its beach access points to vehicles during very high tides.
- The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center, by the convention center, has boardwalks over the Laguna Madre; it charges admission.
Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check TxDOT DriveTexas.
