The drive

Manasota Key is a barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and Lemon Bay, and this short drive runs north along it from Englewood Beach on Beach Road, North Beach Road and Manasota Key Road. It is 5.2 miles and about 15 minutes, slow and gently winding, with palm and sea-grape growth close to the road.

The island is known for quieter beaches than much of the Gulf coast. Englewood Beach is the busiest, with a playground, courts and sunset views. Further along are Blind Pass Beach, also called Middle Beach, which has free parking and no lifeguards, and Manasota Beach, among the least crowded beaches in Sarasota County, which has lifeguards, picnic shelters and a boat ramp. Stump Pass Beach State Park is at the south end of the island, behind you on this route.

The road is a relaxed, low-speed way to see the key rather than a route to get anywhere.
