The drive

Gasparilla Island has one road on and off, and this drive takes it. It starts at Placida on Gasparilla Road, crosses Gasparilla Sound on the 2.5-mile Boca Grande Causeway, and continues down the island on Gulf Boulevard through Boca Grande village. The causeway has three bridges: a steel swing bridge at the north end over the navigation channel and two fixed concrete spans.

The water is the draw. Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico are both in view, and on the island the road is slow and flat, shared with bicycles and golf carts. The 10.4 miles take about 20 minutes.

The drive ends at Gulf Boulevard South, toward the south end of the island.

Good to know

  • The causeway charges a toll for vehicles going onto the island; the toll plaza is open around the clock and takes cash, cards and phone payments.
  • SunPass, EZ-Pass, LeeWay and rental-car toll passes are not accepted at the Boca Grande toll.
  • The causeway bridge has an 80,000-pound weight limit, and large vehicles must be weighed at the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority scale.
  • The causeway is the only vehicle access to the island, and its swing bridge can open for boats, so a short wait is possible.

Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority.
