McGregor Boulevard
McGregor Boulevard, CR 867 · Fort Myers → Punta Rassa
The drive
McGregor Boulevard is the royal-palm avenue of Fort Myers. Thomas Edison had royal palms planted along it at his own expense starting in 1907, and the rows now extend about eight miles. The drive starts at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, at 2350 McGregor Boulevard, and runs southwest through residential Fort Myers to Punta Rassa, 12 miles in about 25 minutes.
The road began as trails that cattle drovers used to take herds to Punta Rassa, and it is named for Ambrose McGregor. Today it is a town road with traffic and a modest speed limit, lined with the palms and older Florida homes. It ends near the Sanibel Causeway, where the Sanibel-Captiva Road drive begins.
After Hurricane Ian, 143 royal palms were damaged and removed along McGregor Boulevard, though nearly all the trees survived. The road is open and the avenue is still the draw.
