The drive
The Ortega Highway is Highway 74 over the Santa Ana Mountains between Orange County and Riverside County, named for José Francisco Ortega, who led the scouts of the 1769 Portolá expedition. It was built in stages and finished in the early 1930s, and it's still mostly two lanes.
Eastbound from San Juan Capistrano it follows San Juan Creek inland past Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park, then enters the Cleveland National Forest and climbs into the mountains, with the twistiest sections in the second half of the drive. Near the top it passes the small community of El Cariso.
Then comes the reason to drive it this way: the road descends the eastern side of the range toward Lake Elsinore, with the lake below, ending in the city of Lake Elsinore just short of Grand Avenue. The highway between San Juan Capistrano and Lake Elsinore is also designated the California Wildland Firefighters Memorial Highway.
Along the way
- San Juan Capistrano
- Ortega Oaks Candy Store
- The Lookout Roadhouse
- Lake Elsinore (Grand Avenue)
Good to know
- It's known as one of the most dangerous highways in California because it's narrow and busy; weekday commuter traffic is heavy and often slow.
- It's a popular motorcycle road as well as a commuter route, so expect riders on weekends and few chances to pass.
- Forest land burned by wildfire beside the highway can stay closed to entry even when the highway is open.
Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Caltrans highway conditions: Highway 74.
