The drive

From Tupelo this stretch of the Natchez Trace Parkway runs north about 44 miles through the rolling hills of Itawamba and Tishomingo counties toward the Alabama line, ending at Mingo a little short of the state boundary. It is a two-lane parkway with a 50 mph limit, no commercial traffic and no entrance fee.

Pharr Mounds, at milepost 286.7, is the main stop: eight burial mounds built roughly 1,800 to 2,000 years ago in the Middle Woodland period. The land climbs gently as it nears the Tishomingo hills, so this is a little livelier than the southern Trace, though it is still a relaxed drive.

The drive ends at Mingo, just short of the Alabama line, where the Trace continues into Alabama.
