The drive

This is a long, quiet run of the Natchez Trace Parkway from Kosciusko north to Tupelo, about 96 miles through pine and hardwood country. The road rolls gently, the speed limit is 50 mph unless posted otherwise, and there are no commercial vehicles and no entrance fee.

A few stops are worth knowing. French Camp, at about milepost 181, marks a stand started by Louis LeFleur in 1812. Jeff Busby campground sits near milepost 191, and Bynum Mounds, a Native American mound site, is at milepost 232.4. At Tupelo, the Chickasaw Village Site is at milepost 261.8 and the Parkway Visitor Center, at milepost 266, summarizes the history of the Trace. The visitor center is open daily 9 am to 4:30 pm, except Thanksgiving, December 25 and January 1.

This is a relaxed drive of gentle curves, long and easy rather than exciting. It ends at Tupelo, where the next drive, Tupelo to the Alabama line, begins.
