The drive

RM 674 is the long back road from the Rio Grande plains up onto the Edwards Plateau. It starts in Brackettville, the Kinney County seat, which grew up in the 1850s as a supply depot for Fort Clark, and heads north out of town. Just north of Brackettville is Alamo Village, the set built in 1959 for John Wayne's The Alamo, now closed to the public.

The road runs north, then north-east, across open brush country, and the land folds into hills as it climbs toward the plateau. Kickapoo Cavern State Park, the stop, is along RM 674 in the hills; its Stuart Bat Cave holds thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats from spring through fall.

The drive ends with a few miles of US 377 into Rocksprings, the Edwards County seat, which calls itself the Angora goat capital of the world. Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area, with millions of bats on summer evenings, is toured from a visitor center on the town square.
