The drive

Dante's View Road leaves Highway 190 in Furnace Creek Wash and climbs the Black Mountains for about 13 miles to a paved viewpoint more than a mile above the valley floor. The park lists the overlook at 5,475 feet. The grades are steady, with a few hairpins, and the road is a spur: you drive up, take in the view and come back the way you came.

The view looks down on Badwater Basin. The viewing area is paved and level, and you do not need to leave your car to see it. The park calls it a popular sunrise spot and a favorite with photographers, and Death Valley is an International Dark Sky Park, so new moon nights are good for stars. The park says it is a 45 minute drive from Furnace Creek.
