Artists Drive
Artists Drive · Loop from Artists Drive
The drive
Artists Drive is a one-way paved loop that leaves Badwater Road through the south entrance and climbs and dips through the foothills of the Black Mountains. The park describes it as steep dips and sharp turns on about nine miles of road, and it can only be driven in this direction, south entrance to north exit.
The hillsides are eroded volcanic deposits of different compositions, which gives them their colors, and the NPS says they look richest in afternoon light. Artists Palette is the best-known viewpoint, and you can see it from the parking area. The park says to allow 25 to 45 minutes.
