The drive

This is the middle of the Ruta Panorámica, the scenic route that Puerto Rico's highway authority finished in 1974 along the Cordillera Central. The drive runs 29.5 miles (47.5 km) from Jayuya on PR-144 and PR-149, then joins PR-143 east through Orocovis to Barranquitas on PR-156. It is rated intense for good reason: the bends are almost continuous, and the road climbs about 5,800 feet in total, topping out near 3,200 feet.

PR-143 is the major middle section of the Ruta Panorámica, and Ruta Panorámica signs mark it through Orocovis. Toro Negro State Forest lies along PR-143, and Cerro de Punta, the tallest mountain in Puerto Rico, is on the same road to the west. Expect wide views and mountain towns, with the road tight to the slope.

The drive ends in Barranquitas, in the middle of the island. It is a long mountain day, not a quick one, and an easy pairing with the other Ruta Panorámica drives in the range.
