The drive

PR-111 is one of two long west-to-east highways through central Puerto Rico, and this drive takes 25.1 miles of it from Utuado west to San Sebastián through Lares. The road is signed as the Carretera Enrique Laguerre along its length. It runs through karst hills and valleys with steady bends and steep grades, climbing about 3,400 feet in total and topping out near 1,500 feet.

Lares is the best-known stop. The Grito de Lares, an 1868 uprising against Spanish rule, began here on September 23, 1868, and the revolt's flag is now the town's official flag. PR-111 is a two-lane rural road, but at Lares it becomes a divided avenue that replaced an older, narrow segment, which still serves as a business loop through town.

Past Lares the road turns rural again and carries on to San Sebastián. It is two lanes with local traffic through the towns, not a quick road.
