The drive

This Ruta Panorámica drive climbs from the edge of Mayagüez, a west coast city, up into the coffee hills to Maricao. It follows PR-105 for 13.4 miles and ends on PR-357 in Maricao, about 40 minutes later. PR-105 runs concurrently with the Ruta Panorámica in several segments, including near Maricao itself. The bends are tight, nearly all the way, and the road rises about 3,100 feet in total, reaching near 1,400 feet.

Maricao's economy boomed with coffee in the 1800s, and coffee is still farmed in the town, which holds a Coffee Harvest Festival each February. Maricao State Forest, also called Monte del Estado, lies along the Ruta Panorámica south of the town, with a stone observation tower at the summit.

It is a slow road through small villages, narrow in places. PR-105 carries on east of Maricao toward the Yauco side.
