FM 149: Montgomery to Anderson
FM 149 · Montgomery → Anderson
The drive
FM 149 is the old country road from Montgomery, one of the oldest towns in Texas and the self-styled birthplace of the Lone Star flag, to Anderson in Grimes County. It passes west of Lake Conroe and runs into the southern edge of Sam Houston National Forest, where the pines close in and the road starts to swing west.
The forest stretch toward Richards has the best of it: long sweepers through tall pines, and a few bends that are sharper than they look. Past Richards the trees open onto hilly farmland and pasture, which in spring is full of bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush.
The drive ends in Anderson, the Grimes County seat, where the 1891 courthouse stands on a hill above town. Anderson is also home to Fanthorp Inn, an 1834 stagecoach inn that is now a Texas Historical Commission site. The turn for FM 1375, another forest road, comes about nine miles in.

Good to know

- The pavement is smoother in Montgomery County and rougher once you cross into Grimes County.
- It's a popular motorcycle road on weekends, so expect riders in both directions.
