The drive

The Karamea Highway goes north from Westport to Karamea, 94 km (58 mi) on the northern West Coast. It starts as State Highway 67 through Waimangaroa, Granity, Ngakawau and Hector, with the sea on one side and the hills on the other. The state highway ends at the Mōkihinui River bridge, and the road continues to Karamea as Regional Route 67, run by Buller District Council.

After Mokihinui the road turns inland and climbs over Karamea Bluff, where it is narrow and winding through bush before it drops to Karamea. Curves are mostly gentle, with one twisty stretch, and the drive takes about 1 hr 25 min.

Karamea sits at the end of the road. Beyond it, a further 15 km leads to Kōhaihai, the western end of the Heaphy Track, but that is outside this drive.

Good to know

  • It is a dead end: the way back from Karamea is the same road.
  • Karamea Bluff is narrow and winding; allow extra time and watch for oncoming traffic on the bends.
  • Storm damage has closed the highway for days before, as in February 2022, so check conditions after heavy rain.

Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Buller District Council: road closures.
