Highway 188: Globe to Jakes Corner
Apache Trail · Globe → Jakes Corner
The drive
Highway 188 leaves US 60 at Globe, just north of Claypool, and heads northwest toward Roosevelt Lake. It follows the lake through the small communities of Roosevelt Estates and Roosevelt, then crosses the Roosevelt Lake Bridge, a two-lane steel arch that carries the road upstream of Theodore Roosevelt Dam. The Forest Service describes it as the longest two-lane inverted arch suspension bridge in America. Before the bridge, traffic crossed over the top of the dam.
Past the lake the road runs through Tonto Basin and Punkin Center and ends at Jakes Corner, where it meets Highway 87 (the Beeline Highway) south of Rye. It is a quiet, relaxed drive, mostly gentle curves.
Two side trips are close to the road. Tonto National Monument, on Highway 188 near the lake, protects two cliff dwellings that the Salado culture occupied from about 1300 to 1450. And the Apache Trail (Highway 88) leaves at the bridge; the Theodore Roosevelt Dam overlook and Inspiration Point sit just off it, and this drive stays on Highway 188.
