Highway 9: Saratoga to Santa Cruz
CA 9, Big Basin Way, Congress Springs Road · Saratoga → Santa Cruz
The drive
Highway 9 crosses the Santa Cruz Mountains from the South Bay to the sea. It leaves Saratoga Village on Big Basin Way, becomes Congress Springs Road, and climbs hard through tight bends to Saratoga Gap, about 2,600 feet up, where it crosses Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35) and enters Santa Cruz County. The climb from Saratoga is the twistiest part of the drive, and that side is a state scenic highway.
Over the top it drops into the San Lorenzo Valley, past Waterman Gap and the Highway 236 turns for Big Basin, and through a string of mountain towns: Boulder Creek, Brookdale, Ben Lomond and Felton. Below Felton the road runs through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, whose old-growth grove has trees close to 280 feet tall, and follows the San Lorenzo River down into Santa Cruz, ending at Highway 1 on River Street.
The drive crosses the Skyline Boulevard drive at Saratoga Gap without following it, so the two make an easy pair.
