The drive

This drive crosses the Sam Houston National Forest from west to east, heading away from Houston's northern suburbs into tall pine. It starts on FM 1375 just east of FM 149, crosses the north end of Lake Conroe, and runs on through the forest past trailheads for the Lone Star Hiking Trail, which threads the forest for well over a hundred miles.

At New Waverly, a small town on Highway 75, it crosses I-45 on the surface road and passes the Forest Service's district office on FM 1375. Then Highway 150 carries on east through more pine woods to Coldspring, the San Jacinto County seat since 1870, whose old county jail is on the National Register. The curves are easy all the way; it's a drive for the forest and the lake.

Good to know

  • TxDOT has had a project to widen the lanes and add shoulders on FM 1375 east of FM 149, with a new bridge over Caney Creek; expect work zones and flaggers if it is still under way.
  • Deer season brings hunters to the national forest in November and December; wear bright clothing if you walk from a trailhead.
  • Forest Service maps and current trail conditions are available from the district office in New Waverly, on FM 1375.
