Valley of Fire
NV 169 · Northshore Road junction → White Domes
The drive
Valley of Fire State Park covers about 40,000 acres of bright red Aztec sandstone outcrops set in gray and tan limestone. The red sandstone dates to the Jurassic, the remnant of sand left by wind after inland seas receded. The park also holds petrified trees and petroglyphs more than 2,000 years old.
This drive enters from the east, where Northshore Road meets the Valley of Fire Highway, and runs 9.5 miles in about 30 minutes. It passes Elephant Rock and the visitor center, then follows White Domes Road to Rainbow Vista and ends near White Domes. The curves are mostly gentle. The visitor center has exhibits on the park's geology, ecology, prehistory and history, and the park recommends making it an early stop.
