Mount Buffalo Road
Mount Buffalo Road, C535, Chalet Road · Porepunkah → Mount Buffalo Chalet
The drive
Mount Buffalo Road climbs 27 km (17 mi) from Porepunkah to the Mount Buffalo Chalet on the plateau of Mount Buffalo National Park. The road gains about 5,000 feet in bends through forest and granite country, with a high point near 4,400 feet, and it ends at the Chalet, so you return the way you came.
The plateau has granite boulders and rock formations, and the Chalet overlooks large sheets of granite. The Chalet was built in 1910, soon after the first road to the plateau, and Parks Victoria says its cafe is open at weekends and on Victorian public holidays. The Horn, at 1,723 m, is the park's highest accessible point, reached by a walking track.
In winter the plateau is a destination for cross-country skiing and tobogganing at Cresta Valley and Dingo Dell when there is snow. Wildlife includes kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and crimson rosellas.
