The drive

Mount Buller Road climbs 15 km (9 mi) from Mirimbah up the mountain toward Mount Buller village, rising about 4,100 feet in hairpins and climbing curves, with mountain views opening near the top. The village sits at about 1,600 m and the summit is 1,805 m. Wikipedia gives the Mirimbah-to-village climb as 15.3 km at an average grade of 6.2 percent, with the final kilometre the steepest, above 10 percent in places.

Mirimbah is where the resort entry gate stands, at the base of the mountain. In the declared snow season, every vehicle entering Mount Buller or Mount Stirling pays a resort entry fee that supports road clearing and parking. There is a free, unmonitored carpark at the base of the mountain just before the gates.

The drive is a dead end at the resort, so you return the same way.

  • Trailers and caravans can't be towed in when chains are required.
  • Resort entry fees apply per vehicle in the snow season; the resort recommends pre-purchasing entry and parking, and the free carpark before the gates is first come, first served.
