The drive
Sound Avenue is a two-lane, tree-lined road that dates to the mid-17th century, and New York designated it a scenic and historic road in 1975. This drive starts at Wading River, where NY 25A from western Long Island ends, and runs east for 14.6 miles through Riverhead's farm country to Mattituck.
It passes Hallock State Park and the Hallockville Museum Farm, with farm stands, vineyards and open fields along the way. At Mattituck, Sound Avenue becomes County Road 48, and the North Fork's Highway 25 drive picks up from there.
It is a town road, not a state highway, so the scenic label carries no legal weight; the character comes from the farmland on both sides.
