The drive
NY 25 is the Main Road of Long Island's North Fork. This drive starts in Mattituck and runs east for 21.5 miles through Cutchogue, Southold and Greenport, then out along the narrowing fork through East Marion and Orient to Orient Point. The land is flat and the road mostly gentle, so the interest is in the towns and the water on both sides.
In Greenport the route runs on narrow village streets, Front Street and Main Street, which is why trucks are signed around the village on a separate NY 25 Truck route. East of Greenport the road continues about ten more miles, with Orient Beach State Park along the way, and ends at the Orient Point ferry landing, where the Cross Sound Ferry sails to New London, Connecticut.
It continues the Sound Avenue drive: that road ends at Mattituck, where this one begins.
