The drive

This Ruta Panorámica drive crosses the Sierra de Cayey from Cayey south to Patillas, 20.1 miles in about 55 minutes. It follows PR-15, PR-741, PR-179, PR-752 and PR-753 and ends on PR-184 outside Patillas. The bends start almost at once and hardly let up, and the road climbs about 3,600 feet in all, reaching roughly 2,800 feet.

The middle of the drive is Carite State Forest, a humid, cool forest of about 6,500 acres spread across the Sierra de Cayey. Cerro La Santa, the range's highest point, is just under 3,000 feet. PR-179 carries the Ruta Panorámica through the forest, the Guavate recreation area sits at the forest's northern end, and Charco Azul is on PR-184 in Patillas. Distant views of the south coast open from the ridges.

It is a slow road, best taken in daylight with time to spare.

Good to know
