RM 1376: Boerne to Luckenbach
RM 1376, Sisterdale Road · Boerne → Luckenbach
The drive
RM 1376 is the back road from Boerne to Luckenbach, a rolling two-lane over limestone hills and creek crossings, through the German settlements of the Hill Country. About 13 miles north of Boerne it reaches Sisterdale, in the valley of Sister Creek, founded in 1847 by Nicolaus Zink and settled by freethinking German intellectuals who fled the failed revolutions of 1848. It became known as a Latin Settlement, and the valley is now a historic district on the National Register.
North of Sisterdale the road climbs on through ranch country to Luckenbach, in southeastern Gillespie County, a few miles from Fredericksburg. Its general store dates from the Engel family's time. Hondo Crouch bought the town in 1971, Jerry Jeff Walker recorded Viva Terlingua there in 1973, and Waylon Jennings made it a national name in 1977. The dance hall, rebuilt by the early 1930s, is still where musicians gather.
