The drive

Lobethal Road climbs out of Adelaide's eastern suburbs and crosses the ridges of the Adelaide Hills. The drive starts at Norton Summit, about 12 km east of the city, and runs 21 km (13 mi) away from Adelaide through Ashton and Basket Range to Lobethal. The bends are nearly continuous the whole way.

Basket Range sits on a ridge at about 462 m, in apple and cherry orchard country with many bed and breakfast cottages. Lobethal, where the drive ends, was founded in 1842 by German Lutheran settlers. The name means valley of praise, and the town is known for the Lights of Lobethal, a Christmas display on its streets each December.
