The drive

Barossa Valley Way is the main road through the Barossa's wine country. This drive covers its middle stretch: 18 km (11 mi) from Lyndoch through Tanunda to Nuriootpa. The road runs along the valley floor with vineyards and wineries on both sides and views of the Barossa Ranges, in gentle, rolling curves that never get tight.

It follows an older alignment of the Sturt Highway, which once passed through these towns before the highway was moved to bypass them. In Tanunda, where German Lutheran settlers arrived in the 1840s, the road runs along Murray Street, the main street. The drive ends in Nuriootpa, and from there Barossa Valley Way meets the Sturt Highway. Mengler Hill Road, from Tanunda to Angaston, is a short climb off it if you want the ridge views.
