The drive

Jamberoo Mountain Road climbs the Illawarra escarpment for 23 km (14 mi) from Jamberoo to the Illawarra Highway near Robertson. Hairpins take it up about 3,100 feet, with dairy farms below and views of the Illawarra behind, and then it follows ridge curves to the top. Parts are steep and narrow.

It is a local road with a fragile history. Landslips have closed it for long periods, and Kiama Council has closed it for repair work. The council recommended Macquarie Pass, Kangaroo Valley and Picton Road as alternatives during closures.

Macquarie Pass, the Illawarra Highway route up the same escarpment, is the main alternative, and Jamberoo Mountain Road is the one cars and motorcycles use when heavy rain floods the upper pass.
