The drive

This drive crosses the range between the Shoalhaven coast and the Southern Highlands, 54 km (34 mi) from Berry through Kangaroo Valley to Moss Vale. Kangaroo Valley Road climbs the range from Berry in a run of hairpins, and the road then drops into Kangaroo Valley, a river valley along the Kangaroo River about 160 km south of Sydney.

Kangaroo Valley's village has Hampden Bridge, completed in 1898 as a suspension bridge. Moss Vale Road then climbs Barrengarry Mountain, and the last 6 km into Moss Vale are on the Illawarra Highway.

The valley was settled in 1817, logged for red cedar, then farmed for dairy and butter. Tourism is now the main income, with shops and cafes in the village.
