Drives Texas East Texas and the Piney Woods
FM 314 and FM 315: Edom to Palestine
FM 314, FM 315 · Edom → Palestine
The drive
This is an easy back-road run across East Texas from the old town of Edom, west of Tyler, to Palestine. Edom dates to 1856, and since the 1970s it's been a small artists' community: potter Doug Brown opened the first shop in 1971, and woodworkers, jewelers and glassblowers followed, along with the Edom Art Festival.
FM 314 runs south from Edom through Brownsboro, and FM 315 carries on south past Lake Palestine and through Poynor to the north edge of Palestine. In between it's rolling farm pasture and long stretches of hardwood and pine, with slow sweepers, a few tighter turns and light traffic. In spring Palestine is known for its dogwoods: Davey Dogwood Park on the north side of town blooms in late March and early April.
