The drive

State Highway 75 is the main road from Christchurch to Akaroa. The drive starts at Halswell and covers 69 km (43 mi) across the Canterbury plain, along the edge of Lake Ellesmere, and up into Banks Peninsula through Little River.

From Little River the road climbs to Hilltop, the highest point on SH75 at about 476 m, where the road looks down on Akaroa Harbour. The descent follows the harbour shore through Barrys Bay and Duvauchelle to Akaroa at the end. The first part is flat and fast; the peninsula section is winding, mostly moderate curves with one twisty stretch.

The drive takes about 1 hr 20 min. It stays on the highway; the Summit Road and several peninsula roads are separate, narrower routes.

  • Some roads on Banks Peninsula are unsealed or narrow, so stay on SH75 unless a map shows otherwise.
  • Flooding and slips have closed SH75 between Tai Tapu and Akaroa in the past.
