The drive
Highway 79 is the gentle way up to Julian from I-8. From Descanso Junction it runs north into Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, through oak woodland and open meadows in the Cuyamaca Mountains, then along the north shore of Lake Cuyamaca, a reservoir run by the Helix Water District with boating and fishing.
North of the lake the highway carries on through the hills to Julian, an old mining town born in the gold rush of the 1870s and known now for its historic main street and its apple pie. The drive ends just short of Main Street.
It's driven north from Descanso, the usual approach from San Diego. Sunrise Highway, S1, joins Highway 79 near Lake Cuyamaca, so the two can be linked into a longer mountain day.
