Kōpū–Hikuai Highway: SH25A
SH 25A, State Highway 25, Tairua Road · Kōpū → Hikuai
The drive
State Highway 25A is the shortcut across the Coromandel Peninsula: 31 km (20 mi) from Kōpū, near Thames, over the ranges to Hikuai, close to Tairua on the east coast. It takes about half an hour, with long climbs through bush and moderate bends, and one twistier stretch.
The road's best-known feature is the Taparahi Bridge, a 124 m, 15 m high span that NZTA built after ex-Cyclone Hale washed out a large section of the highway in January 2023. It opened on 20 December 2023, about three months ahead of schedule.
The drive ends on Tairua Road at Hikuai, where State Highway 25 carries on to Tairua and Whangamatā.
