The drive
Wisconsin 42 runs up the Green Bay shore of the Door Peninsula. This drive starts at Egg Harbor, loops along its shoreline, and goes on through Fish Creek, past Peninsula State Park, then Ephraim, Sister Bay, Ellison Bay and Gills Rock. It ends at Northport, at the Washington Island Ferry dock, where the Northport ferry carries vehicles.
The section north of Sturgeon Bay to Northport is a Wisconsin Scenic Byway and a National Scenic Byway. Near the northern end the road has about 15 curves that seem unnecessary; one account says Danish architect Jens Jensen designed the serpentine route on purpose.
The drive is 26.5 miles and takes about 50 minutes. The climb is 1,000 feet and the curves are gentle.
