The drive

Sunrise Road climbs from Highway 410 at White River to Sunrise, the highest point in Mount Rainier National Park that you can reach by vehicle at about 6,400 feet. It's 15 miles of tight switchbacks through subalpine forest, with a climb of about 3,200 feet.

It's driven uphill, which is the better direction: the mountain grows ahead of you. The road passes the White River entrance, then climbs to the Sunrise area, where Emmons Glacier is visible across the valley. The drive ends on the road short of the visitor center lot.

Sunrise has a visitor center and a day lodge in summer, with food service and a gift shop, but no overnight lodging.
