Drives New York The Hudson Valley and the Catskills
Bear Mountain Bridge Road and 9D
US 6, US 202, NY 9D · Annsville Circle → Beacon
The drive
This drive starts at Annsville Circle in Peekskill and follows US 6 and US 202 along the side of Anthony's Nose above the Hudson to the Bear Mountain Bridge. At the east end of the bridge, Highway 9D begins and heads north on the Bear Mountain-Beacon Highway.
Highway 9D runs about four miles to Garrison, passing historical sites including the eastern end of the Revolutionary-era river chain. A lightly developed five miles lead to Cold Spring, which the road enters as Chestnut Street. Beyond the village it runs about two miles beside the Metro-North tracks in Hudson Highlands State Park, then goes through a tunnel under Breakneck Ridge to Beacon.
The first miles are the twistiest. After that the road is sweeping and scenic, with the river close by.
