The drive

This is the free road up from Tecate to La Rumorosa, 55 km (34 mi) on Mexico 2 in about 45 minutes. It climbs about 3,600 feet through the craggy, granite-boulder country of the Sierra de Juárez to the town at roughly 1,280 m (4,200 ft), and the curves are mostly gentle.

The toll road, 2D, runs alongside it, and Mexico 2 is the free option, with several lookouts on the way up. Wind blows hard across the summit area, which has encouraged wind-power development nearby.

The drive ends at La Rumorosa. The famous descent to the desert on the far side is not part of it.
