Drives Baja California, Mexico Northern Baja: Tijuana, Ensenada and the Valle de Guadalupe
Ruta del Vino: Tecate to Ensenada
MEX 3, Boulevard Universidad, MEX 1 · Tecate → Ensenada
The drive
Mexico 3 from Tecate to Ensenada is the main road to Baja's wine country. It leaves Tecate, the border crossing many drivers use from San Diego, and heads southwest through Valle de las Palmas into Valle de Guadalupe, where most of Mexico's wine is made, then runs on over the hills to the coast at El Sauzal. It is 94.8 km (59 mi) and takes about 1 hr 15 min without stops.
The road is a two-lane federal highway over rolling hills and open valleys, with ridge views and gentle curves. It climbs and descends about 3,600 feet in all and tops out near 2,600 feet. The wineries of the Ruta del Vino sit along and just off the highway in the middle of the drive.
The valley itself has only a few paved roads and many dirt tracks, so most people choose a winery or two ahead of time and use Mexico 3 to get between them.
