H-58: Munising to Grand Marais
H 58, Melstrand Road, Au Sable Point Trail · Munising → Grand Marais
The drive
H-58 is the main road of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and this drive runs east on it from Munising to Grand Marais. The western section runs through the national lakeshore and the Lake Superior State Forest along the lake's southern shore, through Van Meer and Melstrand. The Miners Castle junction with H-11 leads to the rock formation and Miners Falls.
Past Melstrand the road re-enters the park near Hurricane River Campground, then heads toward the Log Slide, where a walk leads to the lakeshore, the Au Sable Point Lighthouse and the Grand Sable Dunes. The Sable Falls parking lot marks the eastern end of the unplowed segment, and just past it the road leaves the national lakeshore for Grand Marais.
The Alger County section was paved from 2006 to 2010, with the final section opening on October 15, 2010. Travel time between Munising and Grand Marais dropped from about 90 minutes to 45 after paving. This drive is 46.9 miles and takes about 1 hr 10 min.

Good to know
- Long sections have little or no shoulder, so cyclists need extra care on the curves.
- Large logging trucks and many types of ORVs use the road.
- H-58 is suitable for vehicles of all sizes.
- The central section past Buck Hill is not plowed and is closed to vehicles in winter; it is used as a snowmobile trail.
- GPS is unreliable in many parts of the park, and the official park map is the better navigation tool.
The middle stretch through the national lakeshore isn't plowed and closes to cars once snow covers it. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: conditions.
