The drive
The Foothills Parkway runs along the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This drive goes west from Wears Valley at US 321 to Chilhowee Lake at US 129, 31.3 miles in all, passing Walland and Look Rock.
Congress authorized the parkway in 1944 as a scenic route for viewing the Smokies. The stretch between Walland and Wears Valley includes the 1.65-mile "missing link", built on a series of bridges and opened in 2018. The older section from Chilhowee to Walland has been open since 1968. The route is Twisty, with three tight stretches and about 5,200 feet of climb.
