A1A: Flagler Beach to Ormond Beach
A1A · Flagler Beach → Ormond Beach
The drive
This stretch of A1A runs south from Flagler Beach to Ormond Beach with the Atlantic just beyond the dunes. It is the road's quieter southern end: Oceanshore Boulevard through Flagler Beach, past Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area, and on through Ormond-by-the-Sea. Gamble Rogers covers about 145 acres on both sides of A1A, from the river to the ocean, and is named for the folksinger and storyteller who died there in 1991 trying to rescue a swimmer from a riptide.
The drive is flat and slow, 13.9 miles in about 30 minutes. A1A here is part of the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway, which was designated in 2002 and made an All-American Road in 2021. The ocean frontage is the draw, not the curves.
The state has built two buried seawalls under the road, one in Flagler Beach and one in Ormond-by-the-Sea, to protect A1A from erosion and storm damage. At Ormond Beach the road meets the Ormond Scenic Loop.

Good to know
- Weekends are busy near the beaches and Flagler Beach's pier, and the road is slow through town.
- The road runs right behind the dunes, so storms and high surf have damaged it before; check Florida 511 for closures in rough weather.
- Gamble Rogers sits on both sides of A1A, so expect cars turning in and out of the park.
Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Florida 511.
